Technical Support Engineer – Unix Active Directory Support Team

Quest Software is seeking a Support Engineer to support customers on our Windows Management product line for our Vintela / Active Directory Support team. Position will be based out of the Halifax, Nova Scotia office.

Engineers will work independently and as part of a team using their skills to solve customer’s technical issues in various heterogeneous (UNIX and Windows) environments. The engineer will be on the Afternoon Shift (12:00 PM – 9:00 PM) and will also be responsible for providing after-hours support as part of an on-call rotation.

Day-to-day Duties Include:
· Field incoming technical issues from customers
· Maintain a personal queue of ongoing customer issues until resolution
· Interface with R&D resources to bring escalated issues to resolution.
· Document all customer/case details in a case tracking system
· Create solutions from resolved issues for future use by customers and internal personnel
· Act as a customer advocate

Required Technologies:
· 3+ years experience as a Sys Admin, directly responsible for one or more UNIX-like operating systems:
o UNIX– (AIX,HP-UX,Solaris, OS X
o Linux– (Redhat, SuSE, Debian)
· Understanding of various UNIX run levelsand proficient with the command line (Pipes, redirect, chaining commands)
· Shell scripting, both writing and debugging (Bourne, BASH, finding return code values, etc)
· Comfortable with at least one text editor (vi, Emacs, etc)
· Configuring and compiling software(gcc, ccand GNU MAKE)
· Thorough understanding of DNS protocol and ability to query and interpret zone records
· Good understanding of NetworkingProtocols: (TCP/IP, UDP, etc)
· Familiar with NIS and NFS
· Familiar with Samba 3.0+ (Setup Samba in Window 2000+ environment , Used windbind )
· Familiar with PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) and configuring modules in the PAM stack (/etc/pam.conf, /etc/pam.d/system-auth, etc).
· Thorough understanding of local user authentication and authorization (/etc/passwd, /etc/groups, /etc/security/user, etc)
· Basic understanding of the C programming language and UNIX/Linux shared libraries (glibc/libc)
· Working knowledge of LDAP (including generating LDAP queries) and Kerberos
· Familiar with Windows Active Directory 2000/2003
· Remote connection methods - OpenSSH (debug, changing ports, Authentication methods), Telnet, FTP, RSH, etc
· You must be independent, self-motivated, a team player and have a people-oriented personality.

Preferred Experience:
· Configured, installed and managed Apache servers (Installed Apache Modules, Configured httpd.conf, Know the format and purpose of .htaccess files)
· Experience with 2-factor authentication (Smart Cards, RSA Tokens, etc)
· Database Experience (SQL, DB2, Oracle etc)
· Setting up Windows Group Policies
· Basic understanding of SMS 2003
· In depth understanding of Active Directory (Sites, Replication, Trusts, Parent/Child Domains, Hierarchal Groups, etc)
· UNIX/Linux Clusters
· Excellent understanding of LAM (Loadable Authentication Modules) and AIX extended security attributes
· Configured and setup Solaris 10 Zones.
